Press release from Mt. San Jacinto College:
The Mt. San Jacinto College football team opened up an early lead on Saturday and let the defense take over as they cruised to their fourth straight win, 31-0 over visiting Orange Coast College.
The Eagles scored twice in the opening quarter as Robert Coleman busted free on a 53-yard touchdown run on MSJC's first possession of the game. After the defense forced the Pirates into a three and out on the next series, the Eagles scored again, this time on a 14-yard pass from Coleman to Matthew Caldera for a 14-0 lead.
Midway through the second period, Coleman again scored on the ground when he ran one in from 10 yards out, capping an 8-play, 56-yard drive and after a two-point conversion the Eagles led 22-0 at the half.
MSJC's defense was strong all day as they continued to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard. Nathaniel Peterson added a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter and then a late touchdown pass from Coleman to Jevin Dorsey in the fourth rounded out the day's scoring.
The Eagle defense held OCC to 237 yards of total offense, just 81 yards through the air. Steven Bradshaw had 11 total tackles, including a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Naisir Morrow had 8 tackles and Nathan Ortiz also collected a sack for MSJC. In all, the Eagle defense made 7 stops for negative yardage on the day.
On offense, Coleman finished his day throwing for 316 yards and rushing for a game-high 95. Taliq Brown had 7 catches for 97 yards while Dorsey had 90 total yards in receptions. Eight different Eagles made receptions on the day.
The win improved MSJC's record to 4-1 on the season as they head into their bye week before starting conference play on Oct. 15. On the 15th, MSJC will host Grossmont at Carl Quandt Stadium with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
