The following was written by students in a club at Santa Rosa Academy that has applied for a $10,000 grant:
The Trailblazer Mileage Club is a fitness activity club for SRA elementary students in first through fifth grade. The club is offered during morning recess and elementary students' physical education classes. SRA high school student interns run the morning club, and high school student coaches in the Introduction to Teaching Elementary Teaching class run the PE portion.
The club perfectly offers fitness opportunities for elementary students and leadership opportunities for SRA high school students. Our SRA student coaches are Sadie Adams-Alaniz, Ciara Armenta, Kaelyn Baker, Allyson Berghaus, Paloma Pedini, Wyatt Rose, Caylee Stevens, Josiah Vaca, and Ruby Willis, all led by our fantastic PE teacher, Dr. Marie Crisby.
Here are some comments from the students participating in this experience: "Being a part of the SRA Trailblazers is an excellent learning experience. Not only are we taught how to teach elementary PE, but we are also taught great leadership skills. Everything we do at SRA Trailblazers is meant to help make physical education fun for younger children. Personally, our experience in Trailblazers has been really inspirational. Seeing these children strive to reach their goals has taught us that no matter your age, you can accomplish anything.”
