A pedestrian on a skateboard was struck by a vehicle Saturday night while trying to cross Newport Road against a red light with traffic approaching from the west, police said.
The accident occurred about 10:50 p.m. at the intersection of Newport Road and Berea Road, according to Menifee Police Department Captain Dave Gutierrez. A 28-year-old male was riding a skateboard eastbound on Newport, using a sidewalk on the south side of the road. When he approached the intersection at Berea Road, the skateboarder made an immediate turn into the crosswalk and headed toward the north side of Newport Road.
The pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that had a green light heading west in the No. 2 lane. The skateboarder was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. The driver of the vehicle cooperated with police and was not cited. There was no evidence of speeding or alcohol.
The skateboarder was not wearing reflective clothing or a helmet. Gutierrez reminded skateboarders to use such equipment and to be careful when approaching intersections and attempting to cross the street.
