A suspect discovered trying to enter a Wildomar residence with a rifle was killed in an officer-involved shooting on Sunday, authorities said.
Sheriff’s deputies from the Lake Elsinore station responded at 1:25 p.m. to a home in the 34600 block of Orange Street to the report of a suicidal subject, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release. The caller reported being in possession of a rifle, wanting to kill himself, and trying to contact the occupant of the residence.
A Sheriff’s Department helicopter located the suspect near the back of the property, trying to pry open the door of the residence. Dispatch advised that an occupant of the residence was unable to safely leave and feared for their life.
Multiple deputies arriving on scene were notified that shots had been fired by the suspect. They located the suspect in possession of a rifle on scene. At that time, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Despite life-saving measures performed on scene, the suspect was pronounced dead. The suspect’s identity has not been released at this time.
The occupant of the house was safely removed from the property with no injuries. No deputies were injured during the incident and there are no outstanding suspects.
