Pedestrian dies in collision with auto on Highway 74

A section of Highway 74 was closed for several hours Tuesday night following a traffic collision in which a pedestrian was struck and killed, authorities said.

Menifee Police Department officers responded at 9:22 p.m. to the report of a collision between a vehicle and a female pedestrian at Highway 74 and Trumble Road, just east of the 215 Freeway. Arriving officers learned from first-responding CHP officers that the pedestrian was deceased.

The driver, who remained on scene, said he was traveling westbound on Highway 74 and approached the Trumble Road intersection on a green light. He noticed a pedestrian walking into his path, but was unable to avoid a collision. This account was corroborated through video that captured the collision.

The video shows that the pedestrian was walking northbound across the highway from the southeast corner of the Trumble Road intersection. That area is posted “no pedestrian crossing” and there is no marked crosswalk.

The identity of the deceased has not been released. There is no evidence of impaired or distracted driving.
