Three Menifee teens were simultaneously awarded their Eagle Scout award during a ceremony that took place Sunday night. Trever Nelson, Caleb Russell, and Austin Thomas grew up together and have participated in the Boy Scouts of America program since they were 8.
Community service projects were conducted by the boys, including the construction of a “Little Free Library”. Caleb Russell said, “It came at a good time because a couple months later, Covid hit, and all the public libraries were shut down. My little share library made it so the community could still get books to read.”
Trever Nelson said that scouting “overall just improved my toolbelt or skills for the life ahead of me.” Aside from learning responsibility, leadership, and how to work with your hands, Rachelle Nelson said, “This program has really helped my son to be more responsible and a great member of his community.”
Menifee Mayor Bill Zimmerman was in attendance and congratulated the boys on their achievement.
The scouting program offers youth leadership and work skills. Scouts are required to try new things in order to pass off badges.
A favorite memory came from a troop hike up the narrows in Zion National Park. Caleb’s dad Eric said, “His leaders said it was tough, but he kept up and never complained.”
Amberlyn Russel, Caleb’s mom, was a Cub Scout leader, and Eric Russell was a Boy Scout leader. They were both able to be a part of the boy’s advancements. Eric enjoyed going on camping and high adventures with them.
Boys must appear in an Eagle board of review interview before receiving their award. They display their knowledge of Scouting principles and discuss the details of their Eagle projects, which often include almost 100 hours of service and community organization efforts.
