Paloma Valley High struggled to make adjustments to Vista’s run-heavy offense and lost some key players Friday night in a 44-8 loss in its football season opener.
The Wildcats’ own offense was hurt by turnovers and struggled to pass the ball. In addition, they lost star players Elijah Orellana and Tristan Keplinger to injury in the first quarter. By the time that period ended, Paloma trailed, 20-0.
Continuing to run time off the clock and pound the ball against the Paloma defense, Vista built a 28-0 lead at halftime and led 36-8 after three quarters.
Wildcats junior quarterback Noah Howard completed 10 of 16 passes, threw one touchdown passes, but also had two interceptions. He carried the ball 11 times for 77 yards as well. Anthony Aranda had three catches, including a touchdown catch for the Wildcats.
Next Friday, Paloma Valley will have a tough road game against Murrieta Valley.
