News release from the City of Menifee:

MENIFEE – The City of Menifee will commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a Day of Remembrance Ceremony, which will take place at Central Park, 30268 Civic Plaza Drive in Menifee Town Center.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the event will reflect on the tragic events that took place that day in 2001 and pay tribute to the lives lost. The evening will include guest speakers, including 67th District Assembly member and retired firefighter Kelly Seyarto, special presentations, and visual tributes. This event is free to the public and open for all ages.

“As a community, we continue to come together to honor the memory of the lives that were lost and honor the first responders who provided critical aid on that day,” shared Jonathan Nicks, community services director. “With this event being in person, we are grateful for the opportunity to add some historical elements for younger generations to learn about the importance of this day in history.”

Flags will be displayed as a representation of the lives lost and historical information will be displayed throughout the walkway of the event venue. Residents can get involved by assisting in placing flags on the field prior to the event. During the event, participants are invited to write a thank you card to New York City Police Department (NYPD), New York City Fire Department (FDNY), Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department (PAPD), who all provided aid on September 11, 2001.

There will also be an opportunity for families to decorate luminary bags and place them throughout Central Park to pay tribute to the lives lost in this tragic event. The night will end with two spotlights cast into the Menifee sky to represent the twin towers. A special thank you to the Veteran’s Resource Committee, CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department, and Menifee Police Department for their support of this event.
