2-year-old girl dies after being struck by vehicle on driveway

The California Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to pay special attention to their surroundings when pulling out of one's driveway and entering a roadway from private property following a tragic accident on Thursday.

A 2-year-old girl died Thursday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle pulling out of the driveway of a residence on Whembly Circle in an unincorporated area just east of the Menifee border, according to a CHP news release. The accident occurred about 3:35 p.m.

According to the CHP, the driver entered a vehicle parked on the edge of the driveway and began slowly pulling forward toward the street. The driver did not see the toddler walk into the path of the vehicle. The right front tire of the vehicle struck the child at the edge of the driveway.

The CHP and Riverside County Fire Department responded. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not arrested.
