As the state moves closer to the June 15 removal of COVID-19 restrictions, the City of Menifee has announced it will allow residents to gather at Wheatfield Park for the city's traditional Memorial Day celebration on Monday.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial, located near the corner of La Piedra Road and Menifee Road. There will be presentations from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Menifee Police Department Chief Pat Walsh. The ceremony will include wreath laying at the monument and words from elected officials.
“Memorial Day is not just about barbeques and family gatherings; it’s a day we pause to reflect and solemnly remember those brave heroes who gave their lives for this great country to protect the freedom we cherish today,” said Michael Cano, commander of VFW Post 1956.
There will also be a tribute to Army Sergeant John C. Barcellano, who was killed on July 10, 2017 while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. His mother, Lisa Weidmann, shared an important message with the community.
“Memorial Day is a day to truly reflect upon the sacrifices made by those in our military; but do not only remember those who gave their lives in service to country, but the families of those who they left behind ... EVERY day is Memorial Day for them," she said.
Chairs will be set up, but residents are asked to register here for reserved seating. This is because seats will be socially distanced, said Dominique Samario, public information officer. However, anyone who attends will also be able to stand behind or next to the seating area to watch the ceremony. Masks will be optional, "at the comfort of the attendees," Samario said.
