News release from local VFW 1956 about a fundraising campaign to assist local veterans:
MENIFEE -- Since World War I, the poppy became recognized as a memorial flower in countries throughout the world. Its bright red majestic petals have graced many fields and now it is widely accepted in its distribution as a true symbol of all those who have given their lives in our nation’s wars.
Because of this historical accepted symbolism, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States in 1922 began an annual distribution of Buddy Poppy to raise funds for its charitable programs on behalf of the needy and disabled veterans and the surviving family members of deceased veterans. Today, Buddy Poppy is distributed by VFW Posts and their auxiliaries in every state of the union and in dozens of other countries throughout the world. More than 14 million are distributed annually; most of them during the period preceding Memorial Day and Veterans Day, but many of them at other times of the year.
This year our Buddy Poppy distribution and fundraising for our local veterans will be different due to COVID-19 pandemic and government restrictions. However, it is our VFW mission to improvise and find ways to raise funds to assist our local veterans. We have approximately 7,200 veterans living in the city Menifee and many need our help with various needs. It will mean a lot to these local brave men and women to know they have your gratitude and generous support.
Our Menifee VFW Post 1956 will be providing a fundraising campaign on our Post webpage and Facebook page for the month of March. To make your generous contribution, mail your check to Menifee VFW Post 1956, P. O. Box 321, Menifee, CA 92586.
Thank you for supporting our defenders with the assistance they need and deserve.
Michael Cano, Post Commander
