A Lake Elsinore man died Saturday night when he was struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle on Highway 74 in Menifee, authorities said.
The County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Alex Herrera, 43. Menifee Police Department arriving at 10:43 p.m. located the victim lying in the eastbound lanes of Highway 74, according to a Menifee PD news release. He was determined to be deceased.
The driver of a white truck was on scene and cooperated with the investigation. He said he believed he had hit someone who was in the roadway but was unsure due to darkness. The investigation revealed that the victim was on a bicycle when it appears that he crossed into the roadway and was struck by the truck, which was traveling westbound on Highway 74. The victim was thrown into the eastbound lanes, where it appears that he was struck again.
The driver of the second vehicle did not remain on scene, but the vehicle’s license plate was left there. Officers who tracked down the driver said it appeared he may not have known he struck the victim.
No additional witnesses were located at the scene and no arrests have been made. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision.
