An injured hiker was rescued by a Sheriff's Department helicopter from the hills west of the intersection of Menifee Road and Simpson Road today, authorities said.
A remote rescue was requested at 12:15 p.m., with the report stating a hiker needed assistance about two miles above the trailhead, according to a Cal Fire news release. Firefighters hiked to the location and called for RSO Star 9 helicopter to respond.
The victim was rescued from the site about an hour later, was transferred to a ground ambulance, and was transported for treatment of a lower extremity injury. No other details were released.
That trailhead, and a trailhead further south adjacent to Aldergate Park, leads to several trails uphill to an area of hills north of The Oasis retirement community and south of McCall Boulevard. It's a popular hiking area for local residents.
On Sept. 6, a woman visiting the area from Florida was found dead on a hillside north of The Oasis after being reported missing two days earlier. There were no signs of foul play and several residents assisted in the search.
