Man charged with attempted murder of his grandmother

A Menifee man faces an attempted murder charge following his arrest for an assault on his grandmother, authorities said.

Andrew Joseph, 41, lives with his grandmother and her husband in the 26000 block of Ridgemoor Drive, according to the Menifee Police Department. Police responded to that location at 1:30 p.m. Friday to the report of an assault. The victim walked to a neighbor's house and reported she had been assaulted by her grandson. The neighbor called police, according to an MPD news release.

Responding officers discovered that the victim had injuries consistent with being assaulted in the face. Cal Fire transported the victim to a local hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.

Family members identified Joseph as the suspect. He fled prior to officers' arrival. Acting upon information that Joseph was in Hemet with another family member, MPD officers prepared to respond to that location. Meanwhile, Hemet PD advised they already had Joseph in custody, responding to a call from another family member.

Detectives gained a search warrant of the victim's residence and found evidence of an altercation. Joseph was booked into the Southwest Detention Center, where he is being held in lieu of $1 million bail and awaiting a Sept. 23 court date.
