Revised CIF sports seasons won't begin until December

The CIF Southern Section office today released its sports calendar for 2020-21 with revisions because of health guidelines during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Instead of fall, winter and spring sports seasons, CIF is combining the athletic year into two seasons, called fall and spring. Fall sports -- which include football, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls water polo, boys and girls volleyball, field hockey, gymnastics and cheer -- will hold their first games in late December or early January, with the season running through the end of March.

Spring sports will include boys and girls basketball, baseball, boys and girls swimming, boys and girls wrestling, boys and girls track, badminton, boys and girls soccer, softball, boys and girls golf, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys and girls tennis. Their first games will be played in early March and the season will run through the end of June.

There will be no CIF sports games played or practice held before mid-December.
