Five donkeys killed in 215 freeway collision with vehicles

Five donkeys that wandered onto the 215 Freeway were killed and one motorist was injured in a collision near the Grand Terrace community this morning, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol units responded at 2:23 a.m. to reports that a herd of donkeys had entered the northbound freeway lanes from the Center Street off-ramp, according to a CHP news release. An additional report stated that a truck had struck two of the donkeys.

Officers arriving at the scene discovered that a total of three vehicles had struck donkeys and that five of the animals had received fatal injuries. One driver was transported to a local hospital, complaining of pain.

The circumstances surrounding the donkeys’ entrance onto the freeway is under investigation. Anyone who may have observed the incident is asked to call the CHP Accident Investigation Unit at 951-637-8000.
