What is this friendly visitor to a local chimney?

John and Carole Lannaman were on a walk recently when they saw this bird fly up onto their chimney. Now the debate is, what kind of bird is it?

John says there are four or five egrets living in the field behind their house near Mt. San Jacinto College. So is it an egret? A heron? A crane?
