Sun City residents plan parade for author's 80th birthday

Residents of the Sun City community will hold a motor parade Monday in honor of Memorial Day as well as local resident Pete Lyons' 80th birthday.

"It started when our neighbor wanted to have a birthday party for her husband, Pete Lyons, who will be 80 on Monday," resident Rose Rhoads wrote in an email to Menifee 24/7. "Pete is a world known photojournalist who has been covering Formula 1 races all his life. He’s written books on famous racers and their cars. He wrote the book on the Riverside Racetrack a few years ago.

"Since we can’t have an actual party, we thought a drive-by with classic cars, race cars, and our regular vehicles would be fun. We’re taking it a step further and circling through Sun City.

"Pete is known all over the world. Mario Andretti was one of the first to send his birthday greetings to Pete via his wife (to be delivered Monday). You can check him out at www.petelyons.com."

Parade participants will meet at the Cherry Hills Plaza behind Provident Bank at 2:30 p.m. to begin the parade down Sun City Boulevard, ending up at the Lyons home.
