New police department gives 8-year-old a special gift

Editor's note: The video posted below shows members of the newly forming Menifee Police Department parading past the home of 8-year-old Emily Calvo to wish her a happy birthday. Chief Pat Walsh, who is assembling his department in preparation for its July 1 launch, learned of Emily's birthday and organized the event with department members in their new patrol vehicles.

We have posted many photos and videos of teacher parades past their students during the county's isolation order. All have observed social distance guidelines. We believe that in balancing concern for the mental health and well being of residents against the recommendations regarding physical contact during the COVID-19 crisis, these events when properly conducted have a positive impact. It is our belief that such events are more appropriate during this time than large gatherings of individuals such as those seen at the head of the hiking trail at Scenic View Drive near the 215 Freeway and Keller Road.
