The staff of The Talon, the student newspaper at Mt. San Jacinto College, this week launched its first independent website. Here is the announcement from Dr. Michele Weber, faculty advisor of the Talon:
The MSJC Talon student newspaper is going online! The new website for the Talon is www.msjctalonnews.com.
The MSJC Talon student newspaper is a platform for over 18,000 Mt. San Jacinto College students and the community to promote a diverse student voice, involvement from the college, and creative collaborations. The Talon published its premiere issue in November of 2012 and has evolved a great deal over the past few years. In 2016, the Talon was in need of a new advisor, so Professor Ron Newman agreed to take it over and continue working with the Talon students along with industry advisor Doug Spoon.
As things progressed, Dr. Michele Weber was added to the team to oversee the Talon, and now the student newspaper is growing and thriving. The Talon is a collaborative publication that is a student club at Mt. San Jacinto College and is created for and by students at the college campus.
The Talon newspaper will also be an integral component of the new Journalism degree program that will be rolling out in the Spring of 2021 at MSJC. That program will include a transferable Associate of Arts degree.
The mission of the Talon is to:
-- Report on important issues concerning MSJC and the students that attend the institution to better connect the student with the institution.
-- Promote awareness of activities that occur on campus and throughout the community MSJC serves.
-- Inform MSJC students of events and information critical to success in higher education.
-- Create a venue for the student voice which fairly represents the diversity of students that attend MSJC in an ethical manner.
-- Support academic freedom for legitimate intellectual viewpoints in academia and the culture as a whole.
-- Support MSJC students with communication/journalism/English/multimedia focused workshops, lectures, competitions, and scholarships.
-- Create a forum where students can network with others with similar interests, gain experience in writing and community involvement, and understand the education system.
