This school year, Menifee 24/7 honors deserving athletes in high school varsity sports in season as Athletes of the Month. Each head coach is asked to select one athlete each month for this honor.
Three athletes were submitted for recognition for their accomplishments last month, all from Paloma Valley High School. Next month we begin honoring spring sports athletes. Varsity coaches of sports at all three Menifee high schools are urged to submit names next month for a more complete representation of our student athletes.
Here are the February Athletes of the Month:
Mya Pierfax, girls basketball: The Wildcats junior guard has done it all this season. In February, she helped Paloma Valley finish off a 13-1 championship league season and breeze through the CIF-SS playoffs to the Division 4AA championship.
For the season, Pierfax is averaging 16.7 points per game. She scored 22 points Thursday night in the Wildcats' 55-32 victory over Mission Prep in the second round of the CIF State playoffs.
Kassandra Ayard, girls wrestling: Ayard led the girls program to a CIF-SS team title, along with winning an individual CIF-SS section title. She is one of two wrestlers in the program to be four-year varsity wrestlers since its inception five years ago. Kassandra is the program's first four-time regional placer. She also tied a program best, finishing in the top 12 at the state meet.
Roman Carrillo, boys wrestling: Carrillo led the boys program to a CIF-SS Division 2 dual meet championship appearance. He also was an individual CIF-SS finalist, along with being a CIF-SS Masters semifinalist and qualifying for the state meet. Roman has committed to NCAA program Jamestown University.
