Roman Carrillo and Cameron Owen finished in the top eight of their respective weight classes Saturday at the CIF Masters boys wrestling meet, qualifying for the CIF State meet next weekend in Bakersfield.
Carrillo placed fifth at 126 pounds. He started out by pinning Alexis Vasquez of Villa Park in the first round, then defeated Marc Legaspe of Northview 5-1 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Carrillo defeated Mahrad Reyhani of Aliso Niguel, 13-2. He lost a 2-1 decision to Koa Ruiz of San Marino in the semifinals, then won by default in the fifth-place match.
Owen placed eighth at 132 pounds. He pinned Alex Cobian of Diamond Ranch in the first round, then lost a 16-8 decision in the second round to Marcus Medina of Servite. Owen battled back in the third-place bracket, winning three more matches on the way to an eighth-place finish.
