Heritage boys basketball team wins playoff opener in OT

The Heritage High School boys basketball team was the only Menifee area team to win among the four squads in action Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

The Patriots improved their season record to 15-12 with a 71-68 overtime victory at Holy Martyrs of Encino in a Division 3A game. Heritage fought back from a 13-6 deficit after one quarter and each team scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Heritage outscored the home team 12-9 in the extra period to score the win.

Heritage will be at home Friday at 7 p.m. in the second round against Yorba Linda.

In girls water polo, Heritage's season ended in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs with a home loss to La Salle, 8-3. In boys soccer, Paloma Valley lost a Division 5 first-round home game to Jurupa Valley, 2-0. In boys basketball, Santa Rosa Academy lost a Division 5AA game at Bassett, 75-57.

Paloma Valley lost a girls water polo first-round game to Marina, 9-0, on Tuesday.
