Firefighters from local fire stations joined Menifee City Council members Wednesday in honoring firefighter and local resident Wendi Miller as the Outstanding Citizen of the Year for 2019.
Miller started her career as a firefighter in 1995 at Menifee Fire Station 76. She went on to serve as an engineer for 12 years and was promoted to captain two years ago. Shortly after that, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Although doctors have told her she has stage 4 cancer and was given four to seven months to live even with treatment, Miller is now in the eighth month following that diagnosis.
"I was told the cancer had spread to my brain and my bones," Miller told the audience. "They told me I would never be cured, but it was treatable. I'm as close to remission as I can be."
In addition to her work as a firefighter, Miller was recognized for her work in helping the homeless and those with post traumatic stress disorder. She was presented a plaque by Menifee Mayor Bill Zimmerman.
