Romoland Elementary School has been named a 2020 California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education.

Romoland Elementary was identified, along with eight other elementary schools in Riverside County, for the recognition based on high performance and progress over multiple years on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard. These indicators included test scores, suspension rates, and conditions and climate at the school. The award honors the systematic work of the entire Romoland Elementary School community to close achievement gaps and provide students with an exceptional instructional program.

"This outstanding recognition for Romoland Elementary School is the result of focused efforts to build a strong learning community in which all stakeholder input is valued, the strengths and identified needs of students drive the decision-making process, and all staff members work together as a cohesive team to maximize their impact on our students." Romoland School District Superintendent Trevor Painton said. "We are so proud of the staff and students and I would like to thank them for their tireless efforts in helping them realize this accomplishment."

The California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes schools that have made great strides in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. According to the California Department of Education, awardees demonstrate excellence in teaching, learning, and collaboration, as well as highly successful school climate efforts ranging from real-time conflict resolution to positive behavior intervention.

"These outstanding schools don’t just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said in a press release announcing the award winners in December. "Thanks go to all the staff at these schools -- teachers, administrators, classified employees -- and parents, who are working together to provide high-quality educational experiences for all of their students."

Romoland Elementary will be formally recognized at the California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony on Feb. 10 at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim.
