Story has been updated with identities of the deceased from the Coroner's Office:
Two Menifee residents died as the result of a single-vehicle collision with a light pole at the intersection of Highway 74 and Briggs Road Tuesday, authorities said.
The vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 74 when it veered to the right and struck a pole at the corner of that intersection, according to a Sheriff's Department news release. The collision was reported at 11:50 a.m. According to Cal Fire, extrication was required to remove the two occupants.
Frances Sanders, 81, died at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Department. Myles Prevost, 88, sustained major injuries and died at a local hospital. There was no indication alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The intersection and a section of Highway 74 around the accident scene were closed for about two and a half hours before being re-opened at 2:20 p.m., just as Heritage High School students were dismissed from classes for the day.
Anyone who may have witnessed this collision and has not been interviewed is asked to call Deputy Bryan at the Perris Sheriff’s Station, 951-210-1000.
