Paloma Valley High School graduate Matt Orzech's stock in the NFL has risen faster than even he could've imagined.
Orzech, whose senior year at Paloma Valley was 2012, went on to a standout career as a tight end and long snapper at Azusa Pacific University before signing as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in April. He became the first former Wildcat to make an NFL roster. But as a free agent rookie, Orzech was somewhat of a long shot to make the team.
It doesn't matter now. The Ravens cut Orzech from their roster because of their depth at long snapper, now Orzech's primary position, but he was quickly signed this week by the Jacksonville Jaguars. In fact, the Jaguars cut veteran Matt Overton at that position and gave the job to Orzech, who will be on the field for Jacksonville's season opener Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
"We saw [Orzech] him in Baltimore, we played against him," Jaguars coach Doug Marrone told the Florida Times Union this week. "We were tracking him, watching him, and at the end of the day, we just felt that he was better."
