Heritage High School officials have identified a freshman at the school as the 14-year-old boy who was killed in a single-vehicle accident on the 215 Freeway near Los Alamos Road Wednesday night.
Heritage principal Erika Tejeda announced on the school's Facebook page Thursday night that the deceased was Rico Edwards. The school will release no other details on the death out of respect for the family, the announcement read.
"Nothing can prepare us for the loss of a friend or loved one," Tejeda wrote. "The most important thing we can do during this difficult time is to support one another, and remember to cherish our friends and family each and every day."
According to a CHP report, Rico died when thrown from a vehicle that rolled over in the southbound lanes of the freeway about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after the driver lost control of the vehicle. The driver, identified as 39-year-old Terrina Edwards, suffered major injuries and is recovering at Inland Valley Medical Center. She will be booked for felony DUI, vehicular manslaughter and child endangerment, according to the news release.
Rico was seated in the front passenger seat and was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report. He was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. A 16-year-old female seated in the back seat was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries.
