Residents, racers and their families will get a special treat with the second running of the Menifee Soap Box Derby this year.
The next event will be held Sept. 14 on the downhill stretch of Menifee Road between Craig Avenue and Holland Road. The event is open to racers in three age categories: 8-12, 13-17 and 18 and over.
A joint venture between Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District and the City of Menifee, the Soap Box Derby was scheduled to return in September 2018 after a one-year hiatus. That event was rained out, however, and was instead run in March. The race now resumes its original rotation in September.
Competitors are invited to race their own home-built cars, which must meet event qualifications. To assist in this endeavor, Valley-Wide is offering car-building clinics on Aug. 24 and Sept. 7. Car inspection will take place Sept. 13 and racing will begin at 8 a.m. the next day.
Last day to register as a competitor is Sept. 7. You can register online at gorecreation.org. Cost is $40 per driver or $100 per business.
