One motorcyclist died and another was critically injured Friday in traffic collisions 12 hours apart on different sections of Scott Road in Menifee.
A man whose name has not been released was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 5 p.m. after his motorcycle crashed into a vehicle on Scott Road near Sweetwater Canyon Road, according to Sheriff's deputy Mike Vasquez. No one else was injured in the collision.
Scott Road was still closed between Sweetwater Canyon Road and Cox Road at 8:30 p.m. while the investigation continued and officials waited for the Coroner to arrive and remove the body.
Vasquez said it was too early in the investigation to comment on a possible cause of the accident. Witnesses told Menifee 24/7 that the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Scott Road approaching Sweetwater Canyon Road when he moved into the westbound lane to pass slower traffic and crashed into a westbound vehicle.
The collision occurred at the east end of the Wickerd Farm property just as the weekly Artisans Market was about to open. There was no traffic in or out of the farm with any effect on the accident, witnesses said. The market was cancelled for the evening and vendors were the only vehicles allowed on that stretch of road as they exited the property.
Twelve hours earlier and about a mile to the east, a motorcyclist was transported with critical injuries after he was struck by a vehicle that ran a red light at the intersection of Scott Road and the 215 Freeway on-ramp. That collision took place about 5:14 a.m., according to Vasquez.
The identity of the motorcyclist, a 45-year-old Menifee resident, was not released by Sheriff's Department officials, but a Facebook post by a woman who said she is related to the victim identified him as Curt Mayer. She wrote that Mayer, who was five minutes from his home when the collision occurred, remained in critical condition Friday night.
The driver of the other vehicle was identified as Mauricio Felix, 27, of Perris. He was arrested and booked for felony DUI. Scott Road was closed for several hours at that point during the investigation.
