Friends and family of a Menifee man seriously injured when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle on the Scott Road freeway bridge Friday morning have set up a GoFundMe site to assist with his medical needs.
Curt Mayer 45, was riding his motorcycle to work at about 5:15 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle that ran a red light at the intersection of Scott Road and the 215 Freeway on- and off-ramps, according to a Sheriff's Department news release. The driver of the other vehicle was arrested and booked for DUI.
Mayer was transported to a hospital, where he was in stable condition Saturday night but facing a long road to recovery, according to the GoFund Me site.
"Curt is stable but is going to need several surgeries, rehabilitation and physical therapy that will take a year or more to recover from," Valerie Thompson wrote on the fundraising site. "These challenges will also come with significant financial burdens which one cannot endure alone. Colleen (Curt's wife) will need to be by his side every step of the way. This will be very stressful for the family, losing both incomes until further notice."
Colleen, owner of a local business named Loveable Pet Styling, was notified by a co-worker of Curt that he never showed up to their normal meeting place to ride to work. After calling 911. Colleen was told there had been an accident on Scott Road. She raced to the scene and saw Curt's motorcycle laying in the roadway. He had already been transported to a local trauma center, where he was rushed into surgery to stabilize him and treat a crushed leg.
"They took him off breathing tubes today, and he was able to breathe on his own with oxygen," Laurie Harper, Curt's mother-in-law, told Menifee 24/7 Saturday night. "He is still unconscious. His head has been cut open to allow for brain swelling. His leg is completely crushed and at this time has no circulation."
