One dead, one injured in collision at major intersection

One person died and another person was injured Saturday morning in a three-vehicle collision at one of Menifee's busiest intersections, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 7:39 a.m. at the intersection of Newport Road and Menifee Road, according to Sheriff's Deputy Robyn Flores. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, another was transported with injuries and a third appears to have no major injuries. The drivers were the only occupants of the vehicles.

The intersection was closed during the investigation, with two vehicles remaining over the curb on the northwest corner -- one flipped over. Newport Road was opened to eastbound traffic about 10:15 a.m., but westbound traffic on Newport and through traffic on Menifee Road remained closed.

No details on the cause of the accident have been released. The investigation continues.
