All kinds of waterfowl are attracted to Menifee Lake, but rarely is one captured in action as beautifully as this photo by Robert Layton of an American White Pelican gliding across the water. Robert says there are about 10 of these birds that hang around the lake near his home each day.
According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website, adults grow an "unusual projection or horn" on their bill during mating season. This type of pelican is also distinguished by the black flight feathers that are visible only when the wings are spread.
Robert is eligible for the Photo of the Month award in our "Menifee in Pictures" contest.
