A Heritage High School senior is one of only 30 students to receive a $40,000 scholarship from Edison International for college study in a STEM-related field.
Samantha Galvan was sitting in band class Wednesday morning when she was surprised by an Edison representative, who told her she had been awarded one of the scholarships to pursue her goal of innovative math education. Galvan, who was accepted by UCLA last week, plans to major in math there and develop new ways of instruction.
The Edison Scholars program accepts applications from students planning to concentrate on one of the four disciplines of STEM -- science, technology, engineering and math. Samantha's application was approved based on a video she submitted, showing ways she hopes to make math education more effective with students.
Edison has awarded more than $9.9 million in scholarships to 640 students in this program since 2006. Applicants must be a high school senior, live within SCE's service territory and have at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Recipients may also be eligible for summer internships at SCE after completing their second year of college.
