For the last 15 years, the Riverside County Professional Firefighters Benevolent Fund has put on the “Shop with a Firefighter” event in both Menifee and La Quinta’s Target store locations. Partnering with Riverside County Child Protective Services, the Benevolent Fund raises money to help children under CPS care have an annual shopping trip with a Cal Fire member at Christmas time.
If you happened to be at the Countryside Marketplace on Sunday morning, you couldn’t have missed the firetrucks lining Target’s storefront. Each child paired with at least one Cal Fire team member, with just under 30 children going their separate ways around the store, carts in hand, and a $220 spending limit. With $150 designated to buying things the children needed – such as school supplies, clothes, shoes, etc. – they had $70 to spend how they pleased.
All children involved are identified and chosen by Child Protective Services. The guardians and counselors of the children sign up to take part in advance, and that list is given to the Professional Firefighters Benevolent Fund to pair with the Cal Fire members thereafter.
With positive energy all around the store, store goers were pleasantly surprised witnessing the holiday cheer being spread by local fire departments. From backpacks to drones, to hugs and high-fives, the joy being shared was undeniable just by seeing the smiles on the faces of the children and the firefighters alike.
Brad Moore, Director of Administration, awarding Target managers with an honorary plaque of recognition for their involvement in the event.
