A freshman at Paloma Valley High School who collapsed during a morning activity on campus has died, authorities said.
Jake Drost died at a local hospital after being transported by ambulance from the football field, where he and other NJROTC cadets were taking part in morning practice, said Candace Reines, deputy superintendent of the Perris Union High School District. Staff members performed CPR on the student until emergency services personnel arrived, she said.
NJROTC students were notified separately of the death as school staff members were briefed, and an announcement was then made to the student body, Reines said. Crisis counselors are on site to assist students and staff.
"Our of respect for the privacy of the family, we are not releasing any other details at this time," Reines said. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the family."
A moment of silence will take place before the Wildcats' 7 p.m. home football game tonight.
