It's a new season and a new league, but it will be the same crosstown rivalry Friday night when Heritage High School plays host to Paloma Valley High School in the annual Menifee Bowl football game.
Both teams have 5-2 overall records coming into their first game in the new Ivy League alignment. Moving over from the Sunbelt League -- where Heritage won eight championships without ever losing a game -- the Patriots and Wildcats are now in a four-team league.
Heading into Friday's 7 p.m. league opener, the host Patriots have won three straight games since starting the season 2-2. Playing two former Sunbelt League opponents the last two weeks, they scored easy victories over Elsinore (35-7) and Temescal Canyon (28-0). Led by new starting quarterback Trey Goodlow, Heritage has outscored its opponents, 182-97.
Running backs Ika Tuatala and Kenny Teter both have excellent chances to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in rushing this season. Goodlow has also rushed for nearly 500 yards.
Paloma Valley has won four straight games since starting the season 1-2. The Wildcats are led by quarterback Mason Carvalho, who has rushed for 1,137 yards and passed for 215 yards. Running backs Dereus Dortch (780 yards rushing) and Jalen Rembert (465 yards) have made big contributions to the offense. Two-year starting safety JJ Peterson and linebacker Jacob Torres (54 total tackles) are stars of the defensive unit.
Advance ticket sales are going on now at both schools.
