Story has been updated to correct some information:
The Riverside Transit Agency has some options to make travel across town easier, and a group of Menifee residents heard about the benefits to them recently.
Members of the Menifee Senior Advisory Committee heard a presentation from an RTA official at the committee’s Aug. 28 meeting. A key development discussed was RTA’s Buddy Fare program in its Dial-A-Ride system.
Under this program, two to 10 people can ride together in a Dial-A-Ride van for a combined $3 fare as long as everyone in the group qualifies as either a senior citizen or is disabled.
A couple of other rules apply. The entire group doesn’t have to be picked up at the same location, but all members of the group must be picked up within a half-mile radius of each other.
The Buddy Fare system allows a large group to call ahead one to three days in advance to schedule Dial-A-Ride vans. To qualify, passengers using Dial-A-Ride must be 65 or over or disabled.
The Buddy Fare system will only serve local residents traveling to destinations in Menifee, including Quail Valley and the Winchester area.
The Dial-A-Ride system operates within a three-quarter-mile radius of the RTA fixed bus system. Thus passengers asking to use Dial-A-Ride must plan to travel near the fixed bus lines.
“If seniors who live in Sun City wanted to come over to our (Kay Ceniceros) Senior Center and they live within that area, would they be able to make a reservation and have a pick-up from the Sun City Civic Association to the Senior Center?” asked Gloria Sanchez, chair of the committee. The answer was yes.
Sanchez also asked whether this program will make it easier for seniors to travel from Sun City to the Newport Road area, where many of the events will be held celebrating the City of Menifee’s 10-year anniversary this fall. This is possible as long as the residents call ahead to schedule a ride and can get to the appropriate pick-up spot.
