Railroad Canyon Road closed after traffic fatality

Railroad Canyon Road was closed at Canyon Hills Road in Lake Elsinore for several hours Tuesday night following a traffic accident that resulted in a fatality, police said.

The accident occurred about 4 p.m., when a Honda Civic traveling eastbound on Railroad Canyon Road collided broadside with a bicyclist who was traveling northbound within the intersection, according to a Sheriff's Department news release. The bicyclist, a 64-year-old Menifee man, died at the scene. His name has not been released.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the collision. The eastbound lanes of Railroad Canyon Road were closed for about four hours and traffic was diverted away from the area during the investigation, causing congestion on eastbound Bundy Canyon Road into Menifee.
