Two dead in 215 Freeway collision north of McCall Blvd.

Two people died Monday night when they were struck by a vehicle on the 215 Freeway while outside their disabled vehicle, authorities said.

The Coroner's Office identified the deceased as Fernando Vasquez, 24, of Yucaipa and Giselle Vasquez, 19, of San Bernardino. They were passengers in a Dodge Ram truck that was traveling south in the No. 2 lane of the freeway south of Ethanac Road in Menifee just after 7 p.m., according to a CHP report. When the vehicle became disabled in the No. 3 lane, the passengers exited the vehicle to push it out of the roadway.

They were struck by a 2004 Honda Civic that was traveling about 65 mph in the No. 3 lane. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a 50-year-old female who was not identified, was transported to Inland Valley Hospital with moderate injuries. The driver of the Honda received moderate injuries but was not transported.

The Riverside County Fire Department reported that three vehicles were involved, but the CHP report did not include a third vehicle. Traffic backed up to the Highway 74 freeway ramp while debris was cleared from the roadway. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
