What’s a hero?

The dictionary offers a few definitions, including:

-- A person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character.

-- A person who, in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model.

Perhaps Menifee’s most famous hero was Audie Murphy, a World War II veteran and actor who lived on a ranch where a housing development named after him is now located. History tells us of the heroic deeds of Murphy in battle and the inspiring roles he created on film.

At Menifee 24/7, we know our city is home to a lot of heroes who are just as special. They don’t need the notoriety of Audie Murphy to earn that title; they make a difference in the lives of others just by being who they are.

As we enter a new year, our staff has created a program to honor some of the “Hometown Heroes” that live among us.

Beginning today, Menifee 24/7 will accept nominations for local residents you believe are Hometown Heroes in their own right. It could be your boss, your co-worker, your teacher, a friend, a relative or any other person with whom you interact. Tell us why this person is a hero in your eyes.

This is not a contest. There are no “winners”. Those who are selected from the nominations sent to us will be highlighted in an article on our website. There is no prize; the type of person we’re looking for isn’t a “hero” because they’re seeking glory.

Tell us about the person you consider a hero and send us a photo of them if possible. The frequency of our selections will depend on the response we get.
