Students in a first grade class at Herk Bouris Elementary School recently won a national competition rewarding them for their accomplishments in mathematics.
Sheryl Coenen's class won the Fall DreamBox Math Challenge K-2 division for the Pacific Region by completing 115 lessons per student from Oct. 30 through Nov. 17. Each student will receive a DreamBox Prize Pack, which includes a drawstring backpack full of items. In addition, $100 will be awarded for a class celebration.
According to Dennis Regus, director of curriculum and instruction for the Menifee Union School District, DreamBox is an online adaptive math learning environment for students K-8.
"MUSD is in the third year of implementation of DreamBox as a supplement to our core math curriculum," Regus wrote in an email. "The strength of DreamBox is that it adapts continuously to the needs of the student based on what the child is struggling with or doing well on. Students are expected to spend 15-20 minutes on the program twice a week."
