Couple gives away bikes to local children for Christmas

A Menifee couple is showing their Christmas spirit by giving back to the community this month in the form of brand new bicycles.

Alan and Kim Gerkey purchased 10 children's bikes -- 5 for boys, 5 for girls -- and will give them away after selecting names from those who enter the contest by visiting their home at 28871 Loire Valley.

The Gerkeys have an elaborately decorated home, complete with synchronized music, that has won awards the last two years. However, many do not know they also give away new bikes to area youths each year as well. Children (ages 4-10 suggested) may stop by their home from 5:30-10 p.m. nightly and fill out a form stating why they deserve a new bike for Christmas. The Gerkeys will select those they feel are most deserving and the winners will be notified by Dec. 23.

"We are fortunate to be able to give back this year to deserving children who may not be able to have the best Christmas," Alan Gerkey said. " We have done this before and it worked out really well."

If the winner needs a different size bike than what is available, an exchange can be made, Alan Gerkey said.

The Gerkey home attracts residents to see and hear its elaborate decorations.
