One person dies in five-vehicle collision in Canyon Lake

One person died and three others were injured Thursday in a five-vehicle collision at Railroad Canyon Road and Canyon Lake Drive South in Canyon Lake, authorities said.

The accident was reported at 6:28 p.m., according to a Sheriff's Department news release. The investigation indicated that a vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed westbound on Railroad Canyon Road and struck several vehicles stopped for the red light at the intersection.

Two drivers were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be rescued by Fire Department personnel. Two people were transported with major injuries and two with minor injuries. One of the drivers was pronounced dead at the hospital. That person's identity has not been released.

Drugs appear to be a factor in the collision, according to police.
