Menifee Police officers cited 21 drivers for failure to yield to pedestrians in a right of way during a safety enforcement operation conducted on Wednesday, according to a news release.

The operation was conducted from 7-11 a.m. at crosswalk locations where complaints have been received from pedestrians and where collisions have occurred. According to the news release, the Menifee Police Department has investigated 50 fatal and injury collisions involving pedestrians in the past three years.

Statewide, California has had 867 pedestrian deaths in 2016, accounting for nearly 24 percent of all roadway fatalities. The national average is 15 percent.
