Karen Valdes, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the Menifee Union School District, was sworn in Wednesday as a member of the California State Board of Education.

According to the Board of Education website, the 11-member board is California’s K-12 policy-making body for academic standards, curriculum, instructional materials, assessments and accountability.

Valdes, who was named Riverside County Teacher of the Year in 1987, has also worked for the U.S. Department of Education in the Teacher to Teacher program. She is involved in many local organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club of Menifee Valley, where she is a board member.
