Menifee residents have the opportunity to donate non-perishable items to a local food bank by participating in the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive, sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service and charitable organizations.
Residents are encouraged to leave items in a bag by their mailbox for pickup by letter carriers who will deliver the items for processing at the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard, which provides food for those in need. Donations should be made on May 13, National Stamp Out Hunger Day.
In issuing a proclamation recognizing the day at Wednesday's Menifee City Council meeting, Mayor Neil Winter said that more than 1.5 billion pounds of food have been collected nationally through this drive since 1991. He also said, "All of our donations stay in our community. We support the letter carriers' efforts to serve our community."
Items may be left at or near private mailboxes at one's residence or at community mailboxes the morning of May 13 for pickup that day.
Volunteers are needed to help process the items at the Community Cupboard. For information, call 951-301-4414 or email mvcupboard@verizon.net.
