Young baseball players from throughout Menifee put on their uniforms, paraded in front of parents and friends and played ball Saturday during Menifee Valley Little League's annual Opening Day ceremonies at Wheatfield Park.
A large crowd attended the day-long festivities, which included music, food, business vendors and activities for children of all ages. Menifee Mayor Neil Winter threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the start of a game featuring members of the Challengers League, designed to give special needs children an opportunity to play ball.
Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies assisted the players as Challenger Buddies. Players were pitched to until they hit the ball and were helped around the bases if needed.
Before the first pitch ceremony, participants and guests paid tribute to Joey Partain, a Challengers player who passed away recently.
