Advertorial supplement:
As they mark their 10th year under the current ownership of the Powers family, Giovanni's Pizza and Pasta is making plans to provide a romantic setting with great Italian food for Valentine's Day on Feb. 14.
Giovanni's, located in the heart of Menifee's business district at 26900 Newport Road, has long been a popular destination for diners who love not only great Italian cuisine, but steak, seafood, ribs and more. Established in 1991, the restaurant has flourished under owners Tom and Caroline Powers, who took over ownership on Feb. 12, 2007.
As Tom and Caroline began to build up the menu and redecorate the restaurant, their clientele grew, as did their ideas for creating a down-home, entertaining place for residents to dine. At one time, nine members of the Powers family worked there. Today, you can still feel the family touch put into the atmosphere and the carefully prepared meals.
Tom arrives early each morning to personally make the pizza dough from scratch. He makes sure the cheese is shredded fresh every day. Giovanni's dishes include many items other Italian restaurants don't have -- including cantalone and manicotti. Spaghetti dinners are popular as well, and the barbecue ribs are one of Giovanni's most requested meals.
Mid-day guests stop in to take advantage of the lunch buffet, which is a great deal at $8.69. That includes a selection of pizzas prepared special for the occasion, soups of the day and a fresh garden salad. Lunch specials start at $6 and are served from 11-4 every day. They also offer take-out service.
As delicious as the food is, the ambience is just as special. Several years ago, seeking a pleasant atmosphere featuring something gentler than karaoke, Tom Powers started singing to the customers. Now he sings three nights a week, strolling through the aisles and singing popular tunes as residents enjoy their meal.
Every Thursday features love songs. Friday night is '50s night. Saturday features songs from the '50s and '60s. And Sunday night features live performances by a guitar player.
"It's very homey," Tom Powers said. "We like to think it's very friendly, as if you were surrounded by family. Even when we have the musical entertainment, people can still sit here and talk."
Tom and Caroline Powers are also known for giving back to the community. They support many charitable groups and offer gift cards for raffles. They employ a group of students with special needs from Mt. San Jacinto College, providing them off-campus training in food preparation and restaurant maintenance. And they are also offering to their customers a new rewards program that has already received well more than 1,000 registrations.
