Christopher, Mary Carnes given Power to People award

Menifee residents Christopher and Mary Carnes were presented with a "Power to the People" award by California Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez on Friday for their contributions to the community.

Thousands of residents visit the "Carnes Christmas House" each year. Christopher and Mary and family members decorate the outside and entire first floor of their house with elaborate lighting, electric trains, miniature Victorian villages, colorful Christmas trees and many other items.

More than that, they make an important contribution to the community by asking guests to donate non-perishable food items when they visit. This year, more than 6,500 pounds of food was collected and delivered to the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard, which helps feed those in need.

"In addition to giving both kids and adults something beautiful to experience at Christmas, they're helping their community as well," said Melendez, who serves the 67th Assembly District.

The presentation was made during Melendez' monthly meeting with residents, held this time at RJ's Sizzlin' Steer restaurant in Murrieta.
